Peace, Love, and May is Bike Month: Spring Back to Bikes
Participate in May is Bike Month activities locally and on campus!
Hey Aggie Cyclists and Active Moo-vers!
We’re excited to see Spring Quarter here. We’re still buzzing from Picnic Day and looking forward to Whole Earth Festival, and one of our favorite things, seeing many of you Moo-vers graduate. But more on that later. 🚲 🎓 🐄
May is Bike Month
I’m also super stoked because May is Bike Month. That’s not just fun to say, but May is National Bike Month, so proclaimed by the Bike League, but celebrated locally via the “May is Bike Month!” campaign. This year there are a number of things in store to keep you riding and we encourage you to attend local events and participate at www.MayIsBikeMonth.com.
Our good friends at Sacramento Area Bike Advocates, SABA, are running the event this year, using the Love to Ride platform. Those who sign up with the platform, and log rides, will automatically be entered for a chance to win an ebike, railbike excursions, gift cards, and more. One of the coolest things, I think, is that participants can win 100 hours of free BikeLink parking. Use that at the Davis train station, when you embark out to explore The Bay without worrying about your bike dwelling at the Davis Depot.
Now… it isn’t just about promotion, it’s also about, you know, riding bikes! Well, there are several events in May where we hope to see you on your bike. I’m really excited about the first Sunday in May, May 7, when we support the annual Loopalooza. A celebratory ride along the 12 mile Davis Bike Loop through parks, greenbelts, and the UC Davis campus. Come out with your friends and family, this loop is good for all ages and abilities. We’ll be set up outside Shields Library with our friends from the ASUCD Bike Barn, helping orient people through campus, ensuring bikes are in good repair, and offering registration services.
Bike Auction and More
Maybe you need a bike, or bike stuff? Well, we can help you on both counts. We’ll be holding the last monthly bike auction of the academic term, launching on May 10 and closing on May 18. We’re going to do something a bit different this time though, we’re going hybrid. Throughout the month, we’re planning to bring the top choice bikes out for viewing at the ASUCD Bike Barn, with a special viewing on Thursday, May 18, which happens to be the region’s Bike to Wherever Day. Stop by the ASUCD Bike Barn that day to check out our bikes, our partner’s special deals, and to grab some sweet bike swag. Click here, starting May 10, to check out the bikes.
Speaking of swag, we’re happy to share about our newest incentive program, Lit Not Hit. We’re really excited about this program, where we are offering free bike lights (good ones) as an incentive for a short online education, focused around bicycle safety at night. It’s pretty simple, especially if you are familiar with Helmet Hair Don’t Care. Follow this link, complete the survey, then take your confirmation email to the ASUCD Bike Barn to fetch yourself some sweet USB rechargeable (yes, really!) bike lights. Do remember to take them off your bike when you lock up, we don’t want you being unlit.
All this and more! Stay tuned for other events throughout the month where we partner with our friends to bring the bike stoke to you! See you in the bike lane Aggies!
